Breastfeeding for Birth Professionals
Are you ready to learn more tools to help a nursing relationship get off to a smooth and enjoyable start? As a birth or postpartum doula, nurse, midwife, or other professional working with new moms, you are in the perfect position to support a new mother in establishing breastfeeding. WellPregnancy guest instructor Jessica Lang Kosa, PhD, IBCLC, CAPPA Faculty, will share the latest information about the newborn’s amazing abilities to initiate breastfeeding. Understand how to educate parents and hospital staff about newborn self-attachment, how to set the stage for “breast crawl” and initial attachment, and how to assist when necessary with minimal intrusion. Learn the latest research on the impact of birth interventions on breastfeeding, and strategies for establishing breastfeeding after a C-section or difficult birth. Review troubleshooting of common problems in early breastfeeding, focusing on nipple pain, engorgement, and milk supply. Gain more strategies for teaching good latch, balancing supply and demand, and comfort measures for relief of sore nipples or engorged breasts. Review a straightforward breakdown of causes of low milk supply, how to help and when to refer. 3 CAPPA CEUs awarded
Healing Birth Trauma
We’ll support each other as we explore the ways in which birth trauma manifests for the women we serve, and seek to understand the ways in which we can shift the culture of healing around trauma experienced through childbirth. We’ll discuss our exposure to and experience with trauma in the birth setting, and explore the healing power of some of the tools that can be used in supporting women who have experienced a traumatic birth. In addition, self care and self healing will be discussed. WellPregnancy’s guest instructor, Kristen Avonti, is an educator, healer, herbalist, midwifery assistant and mother of three. Her deep passion for healing and sharing her healing wisdom drives both her clinical practice and the educational center she runs. 2 CAPPA CEUs awarded.
Therapeutic Touch Techniques
Want to incorporate more therapeutic touch techniques into your work with laboring women or your childbirth classes? WellPregnancy’s guest instructor Heather Birch, LMT, specializes in pregnancy and labor massage at her practice, Insight Therapeutic Massage in Concord and Epsom, NH, and is a doula and the mother of seven. Heather is excited to share with other birth professionals the secrets of using touch in labor.
This hands on workshop will include plenty of time for practicing a variety of techniques! Participants will learn the benefits of therapeutic touch, what points to avoid in pregnancy which may be stimulated in labor, and information on oils and the use of tools. Protective body mechanics will also be discussed. Increase your confidence and refine your techniques! 2.5 CAPPA CEUs awarded.
